“Just bout broke” is Badly Bent’s first effort. The voices of Steve Young
and Fred Helmich will remind you of Neil Young and David Bowie
respectively. Their tunes are as diverse. This effort is a laid back and mello
representation of the band’s interpretation of life and love in the mountains
of Eastern Kentucky. At times you can hear the band’s country influences
such as in the song “me”. You can hear the rock and roll influence in the
tune. “Solid body” which sounds a lot like “Dire Straits”. The song
“Grandpa” showcases the band’s bluegrass connections. In short
Badly Bent is not afraid to take chances in their music and songwriting.
“Everything to Lose” the bands second effort is a little more edgy. The
band proves they can tell a good story and rock the house. Their music can
also deliver an important message. Once again, the band is not afraid to take
chances with their music or to express an opinion.
Badly Bent is worth a listen and their live show is even better. The band
does a good mix of their own tunes and cover some really great classic
tunes from Dire Straits, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Hootie and the Blowfish and,
The Band just to name a few. Whether they are rockin the house, crooning
a smooth ballad or, just simply wailing the blues this is a great band.
